POSITION FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, performs duties necessary to support the Maintenance Division in performing technical work in the maintenance and operations of Wastewater and Water piping system and routine or preventative maintenance at Water and Wastewater facilities to include, but not limited to, routine checks, painting, mowing, weed eating, oil pump bearings, grease floats, cleaning out lift stations, running generators, cleaning grit screens, and odor control methods.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Responsible for repairing water leaks on mains, service lines, meters, valves, and fire hydrants. Installs or replaces meters, water taps, water lines, valves, fire hydrants, and service lines. Performs back filling and leveling of job sites. Washes and flushes water mains and hydrants; Exercises valves and other equipment.
  2. Performs facility and grounds maintenance duties. Duties include, but are not limited to, operating a variety of tools and equipment such as: backhoe, dump truck, other fleet vehicles, sewer cleaner, leak detection equipment, televising equipment, line locating equipment, compressors, jack hammers, tools, and electronic equipment.
  3. Repairs and replaces old sanitary sewer lines with new pipe and installs or replaces sewer taps. Installs sewer cleanouts and cleans sewer lines using a vactor truck, and/or other equipment as needed. Back fills and levels job sites. Installs, raises and cleans out manholes. Inspects and maintains trucks, tractors, water pumps, and tools on a daily basis. Turns in records daily.
  4. Performs additional duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Required knowledge and experience is normally obtained through the completion of a curriculum resulting in either a High School Diploma or GED, and two (2) to three (3) years' work related experience.
  • Must exhibit attention to detail, accuracy, and safety.
  • Must be able to communicate and present oneself in a professional manner.
  • Ability to understand and follow written or verbal instructions and/or directions.
  • Ability to perform meter reading and fire flow testing on hydrants.
  • Participates in television monitoring survey and repair of sewers.
  • Ability to read, write and keep logbooks, inventory records, logbooks, purchase orders and work requests.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City employees and officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to work under high demands, short time constraints, and pressure of a fast paced work environment.
  • Ability to respond to emergency call-out.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a Valid Florida Class E driver's license.
  • Must pass applicable pre-employment testing and background and credit checks.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
